Uses reanalysis weather, which is smoother and weaker than real mountain storms. Wind and snowfall are usually underestimated. For reviewing past events, not for planning a trip.

Before you open the map

Snowflud is an educational research project. It is not an avalanche forecast, not a safety tool, and not a substitute for training or for your local avalanche center.

Estimates come from simple, unvalidated rules applied to terrain and weather-model data. They have not been tested against past avalanches yet, and they can be wrong.
Weather is modeled for one point per area. Conditions on a real slope can differ a lot, and the model can miss wind and snow that matter.
Avalanches can start on slopes shown as lower likelihood, and can run far below where they start. The runout layer is a crude estimate and real slides can run farther.
Read the official forecast before any trip. Make your own decisions, with training, rescue gear, and partners.
Do not use this site to decide whether a slope is safe to travel on.

About and data

What this is. A research prototype that combines terrain (slope, aspect, elevation) with weather-model data to explore where wind slab, storm slab, and a persistent-slab proxy could be more likely. Every threshold is an unvalidated heuristic, listed in the project docs.

Layers. Where it can slide shows terrain steep enough to start slab avalanches. Where it is most likely weighs that terrain against recent and season-to-date weather and lists the reasons for each spot. Where it could run takes the start zones the model rates Possible or higher at the selected time and estimates how far slides from them could travel, using an energy-line (alpha angle) rule. It runs farther on higher-danger hours.

Data.

Elevation: AWS Terrain Tiles (Tilezen), derived from USGS 3DEP, SRTM and other sources. Attribution required.
Weather: Open-Meteo, CC BY 4.0, free non-commercial tier.
Nothing from avalanche-center bulletins or observations is used or copied.
